Karel Appel
05.09.2002 - 13.10.2002
The exhibition begins with Appel's early work around 1950, which is associated with the revolutionary and groundbreaking artist group COBRA: works with which Appel initiated the decisive movements of neo-primitivism and neo-expressionism.
The exhibition also focuses on works from the 1950s: on the one hand, the paintings that focus on the materiality of color, and on the other hand, the works characterized by gesture and dynamics, which can be seen in connection with American action paintings and informals. The sculptural work of Karel Appel is also presented with a selective selection of sculptural examples from the main sections of the work.
In addition to precisely selected works from the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, the focus is on the current works of Karel Appel. A rich spectrum of formal, content-related and painterly strategies - landscape, nude alongside free, non-representational painting - illustrates the powerful late work of the now 80-year-old.
