The White Cube and the Black Box make up a fundamental pair of opposites: the White Cube signifies the democratic, white basic conditions that the exhibition space provides for art. The public roams through an austere but dazzlingly bright space where nothing distracts or interrupts – its architecture ensuring in its elegant restraint that all attention is drawn to the art on the walls. In contrast is the Black Box – the dark film capsule, the magic world of the cinema, where the public can submerge into all imaginable real and virtual worlds on the screen. The exhibition White Cube – Black Box is the sixth edition of the Bank Austria Art Collection format collected; it shows the works of six artists all united in questioning in their art the exhibition conditions and space offered by the present day.
